COL quick training of youth in L3F in The Gambia.

The agricultural world is challenged by factors like #ClimateChange, conflicts, diseases such as #Covid-19, gender insensitivity, attrition of the farming population and the syndrome of ageing farmers.

#COL4D visited #TheGambia and its President, His Excellency President Adama Barrow, to present a broad-based “Collaborative Action for Food Security” through which the integrated Lifelong Learning for Farmers #L3F approach could be scaled up in the West African nation, particularly for young farmers.

Moving forward, COL will be working with various stakeholders in The Gambia to scale up its L3F approach for the attainment of food security, one of the SDGs – a twin challenge that requires going fast and far at the same time.

#COL4D in Support of #ODL Design for Teacher Training in #SierraLeone

#TeacherEducation in Sierra Leone faces unique challenges. Not only does it need to meet the annual demand for new teachers, but it must also address the training needs of existing unqualified and untrained teachers. Additionally, providing #ContinuousProfessionalDevelopment for over 37,000 government-employed teachers is crucial. To tackle these issues, open and distance learning (ODL) has become essential for teacher education in the country.

A stakeholder workshop on ODL design for teacher training, organised by Sierra Leone’s Teaching Service Commission with support from #COL4D, shed light on the importance of ODL. The high-level workshop brought together 30 participants from various teacher training institutions and national bodies, including the Tertiary Education Commission, the Ministry of Technical and Higher Education, and the National Council for Technical and Vocational Awards.

During the interactive sessions, participants discussed critical areas such as the current status of ODL, existing courses, enrolment, staff capacities, and the use of technology in teacher training. COL emphasised the workshop’s significance in applying the recently developed national #ODL policy for tertiary institutions to teacher education in Sierra Leone.

Based on the workshop outcomes, guidelines have been drafted for ODL In-Service Education and Training courses that lead to certification, as well as credit-bearing courses for promotion and career advancement.
